Family systems expertise for complex family law matters

About Heather

Clinical Experience Meets Family Law

For more than fifteen years, my work has focused on children, parents, relationships, family conflict, and the complex dynamics that often accompany major family transitions.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Master’s degree in Education with a concentration in Marriage and Family Counseling, and Specialist in Education degree from the University of Florida. My professional experience has included clinical practice, forensic evaluation, high-conflict family work, domestic violence and coercive control, parent-child relationship concerns, mediation, and other court-involved family services.

Today, my family law practice is focused on helping families, attorneys, and courts better understand complex family dynamics, identify the intervention that fits the problem before them, and move toward informed, practical outcomes.

How I Approach Family Law

A System’s Perspective

Families do not exist in isolation. Parenting decisions, conflict, and transitions occur within a larger system of relationships, responsibilities, experiences, and developmental needs.

My family systems training means I look beyond a single event, allegation, or disagreement to understand how the different parts of the family system interact. In court-involved work, that perspective is paired with careful attention to professional neutrality, the available evidence, the specific role of the appointment, and the questions the Court needs answered.

The goal is not simply to identify what is wrong. It is to understand what is happening, why it may be happening, and what type of intervention or resolution is most likely to help the family move forward.

The Foundation

Clinical Experience

My work is informed by more than fifteen years of experience as a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. Since founding Vann Counseling & Consulting in 2012, I have worked with individuals and families across the lifespan, with particular experience in family systems, trauma, child and adolescent development, neurodivergence, relationships, and co-parenting dynamics.

That clinical background provides a strong foundation for understanding the human and relational dynamics that often underlie family law disputes.

The Application

Forensic & Family Law Practice

My family law work includes Social Investigations, Guardian ad Litem appointments, Parenting Coordination, Family Mediation and Forensic Family Law Consultation.

I regularly work with high-conflict matters involving competing allegations, domestic violence and coercive control, parent-child relationship disruption, complex family dynamics, and cases in which the Court needs clear, neutral information to support decision-making.

Beyond the Work

Florida Roots

I’m a third-generation Floridian and a lifelong Florida Gator. Outside of work, you’ll usually find me at the lake, traveling with my husband, spending time with our three mini-Vanns, reading, or attempting to keep the growing collection of coffee cups on my desk under control.
